Introduction

“In the contemporary, fast-paced work environment, characterised by relentless demands and potential burnout, the significance of prioritising mental health and overall well-being among employees has transcended mere choice—it's become an undeniable necessity." (FabHR, 2023)

This initiative within the organisation's human resources department links the organisational policies and the wellbeing of the employees effectively.

What is employee well-being?

  • Well-being means individuals health, happiness, and satisfaction in their workplace.
  • Consists of physical, mental, emotional, social, and financial dimensions.
  • This is influenced by the work environment, job role, and organisational support.

Physical wellbeing consists of nutrition, exercise, sleep, and overall health. Employees who prioritise physical health have greater energy.

Mental well-being focuses on cognitive health, emotional intelligence, problem-solving abilities, and the and the capacity to manage stress and anxiety.

Emotional well-being is recognising and managing one's emotions effectively and efficiently. This includes self-awareness, empathy, and emotional regulation.

Social well-being refers to individuals’ connections and relationships with others.

Financial well-being relates to an individual's financial stability and security.

Benefits for the organisation

A survey conducted by Gallup found that organisations with higher levels of employee engagement had 21% higher profitability.” (2023)

How the wellbeing of employees influences engagement

  • Can be identified as emotional commitment towards the organisation by the employees.
  • Engaged employees are not just satisfied with their job but go beyond it.

  • Engaged employees are satisfied with their jobs and connected to the organisation's goals, values, and mission, and they go the extra mile to make the company's goals a success.
  • Engaged employees are more productive, innovative, and loyal to the organisation; they are satisfied with the job, which reduces job turnover; they become brand advocates, promoting company image; and they are less likely to experience burnout or mental issues, contributing to a healthier work environment.

How employee motivation and wellbeing improve motivation and productivity

  • Motivation can be identified as a physiological factor that drives employees to perform their tasks effectively and efficiently and help achieve organisational objectives creatively.
  • The Bureau of Labour Statistics defines productivity as “a measure of economic performance that compares the amount of goods and services produced (output) with the amount of inputs used to produce those goods and services.”

Earlier days, employees thought that working under pressure helped them work the best, but now it has changed to ensure that their physical and mental wellbeing is well taken care of.

Human relations theory shows that higher employee wellbeing shows higher morale, which ultimately leads to higher productivity.

Conclusion

Wellbeing is important in an organisation. If the employer needs employees to stick around, they should make them happy and healthy.

For the start, you can do a survey to understand the employee's needs and take corrective actions by promoting healthy habits and healthy eating. Which will result in a happy employee who contributes to the productivity of the company and improves the motivation of the employees.
